Year 6-7 Transition

Taking the step between primary and secondary school is a daunting prospect for parents and children alike. At The Birley Academy we aim to make the process as smooth, easy and enjoyable as possible. Places for The Birley Academy are allocated by the local authority and are confirmed on National Offer Day on the 1st March. From this point, we are working behind the scenes to gather as much information about your child from their primary school. In early July, we will host all Y6 students with accepted applications to the Academy for our transition week programme. During this week, we will also invite you to an induction evening at The Birley Academy. You will be invited to this induction evening, via a letter to the address that you supplied on the application form. Should you have changed your address between the end of October and the 1st March please let us know so that we can send all correspondences to the correct address.

Together with the information we gain from parents and students following the intake evening and information from the primary school staff, we formulate the form groups to ensure that all students have the best chance at academic success going forward. This process is designed to ensure all of our students meet new people and new friends. Your child will also be allocated teaching groups in which they will be taught some subjects based on their SATs results.

During the first term we have a ‘meet your form tutor’ event and there are drop-in sessions to meet with senior leaders.  In January, we have a Parents’ Evening where you have chance to talk with your child’s teachers who will provide you with information on their progress and effort in lessons to date.

Each year group at The Birley Academy has a Head of year, a Deputy Head of Year and an Assistant Head Teacher attached to their year. The Deputy Head of Year is not a teaching member of staff and is available should you need them at any point during the school day. They can be reached by the school switchboard. They will always aim to deal with your enquiry as quickly as possible.
